The varsity volleyball team had their district match against Howell High School on Wednesday night at Brighton High School.

The Pirates made it to the second round through a bye in the first round. The Highlanders beat South Lyon East on Monday night, securing their spot in the second round.

The pirates started off kind of shaky and lost the first set 15-25. But after regrouping and coming back the girls were able to win the second set 25-18. The pirates fought hard but hit another rough patch in the third set, losing 18-25. Not going to give up yet Pinckney recovered during the fourth set, taking the win 25-20. In the fifth and final set  the pirates fought with everything they could but ended up getting defeated by the Highlanders 9-15.

While it was a very emotional night, being it’s the last time that many of the girls will play together, the way Pinckney played was nothing to be ashamed of.

“It was the best district showing that we’ve had in a lot of years,” coach Susan Bostian said.

Pinckney has had 7 district losses in a row, with their last win being over Ann Arbor Skyline in 2013. However even with the loss, the Pirates left with their heads held high.

“Yes we lost but with how we played I don’t even care,” junior Sophia Oakes said. “Tonight I was so proud to be a pirate.”
