Late Thursday, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake destroyed the lava basin of Mt. Kilauea. This caused an eruption that sent molten rock 300 feet in the air. Lava has taken over half of the Lelani Estates area, destroying thirty-six houses.

Currently, the area has tripled in sulfur dioxide emissions. The lava that is flowing into the ocean is releasing hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass in particulate form into the air.

There has been one injury reported. A man was sitting on his porch when a lava bomb (A chunk of lava 2.5 inches across that cools before it hits the ground) struck him in the leg and seriously injured him.

Be looking for updates as the volcano is still erupting. CNN reported:

“The United States Geological Survey warned residents to remain alert.
“At any time, activity may again become more explosive, increasing the intensity of ash production and producing ballistic projectiles very near the vent,” said the USGS. “Communities downwind should be prepared for ashfall as long as this activity continues”” (CNN, “More eruptions from Kilauea are possible, but laze and lava are the biggest hazards right now”).
